Frequently Asked Questions

What is Down?

Down is the soft undercoat beneath the birds’ feathers, found mainly on the belly and breast. It consists of clusters of light, fluffy filaments growing from a central quill point. As there’s no quill shaft, the structure is naturally soft.

Each down cluster provides geese and ducks with warmth and insulation by trapping tiny pockets of air within the filaments. Combined, they create thousands of insulating pockets.

At the same time, the down keeps the birds dry by allowing water and moisture to escape from their bodies. All of these properties make them a fantastic material for duvets.

What’s the difference between down and feathers?

Feathers make up the rigid plumage on ducks and geese. Each feather has a flat appearance and two-dimensional construction.

This means it’s unable to trap air effectively and has little insulation value. The main purpose of feathers in pillows is to provide bulk and support. In duvets, they can reduce the quality of the final product if too many are used. Down is softer and has greater insulating properties while taking up much less space.

How is your down sourced?

The eiderdown we use for our limited-edition duvets comes from abandoned eider duck nests on the Norwegian island of Svalbard. After midsummer, the mother and her ducklings head out to sea until the next year.

We then collect the down from their abandoned nests, which they would never use again. At no point do we touch the birds – the mother duck plucks the down from her own chest to line the nest.

For our Classic, Premium and Premium Plus Collection duvets, as well as our pillows, the down comes from geese that have been slaughtered for meat production. We strongly object to any form of live plucking. We only use trusted European suppliers who hold certificates confirming that animal welfare is central to their business.

What makes Norvegr products unique?

Norvegr is a family business, built on three generations of Stene family legacy and a rich history of Norwegian craft excellence. Our products use the very best down to ensure unrivalled quality in comfort, and duvets that feel as light as a cloud. We use a unique channel construction technique that better helps with regulating heat as you sleep, creating a product that ensures an uninterrupted night of rest for all places and all seasons.

We are the only specialist down cleaner in Norway which allows us to offer every customer a restoration service for their Norvegr products, meaning each duvet and pillow has the potential to last a lifetime.

How is a duvet different from a comforter?

Both are a type of thick, fluffy bedding that covers you at night to keep you warm and comfortable. However duvets are generally used with removable duvet covers. Comforters either have built-in covers or no covers at all.

The lack of cover means comforters can be harder to customise, harder to maintain, and often require additional bedding like a topsheet. In a comforter the filling is evenly distributed and held in place by stitching. This potentially allows the manufacturer to use a less-than-premium quality filling, as the stitching can camouflage any discrepancies. There is often less filling than in a duvet, so it provides a flatter, less fluffy experience. When it gets really cold, you may need to add extra blankets.

What are the tog levels of Norvegr products?

Tog ratings are widely used in the UK and in a few other destinations to determine the thermal resistance of duvets, but these ratings can often be misleading based on the setting, the individual and the quality of the filling used. With Norvegr products, we prefer to use fill power and materials used to differentiate our lines.

However, as a point of comparison, our Summer duvets are roughly equivalent to 4 tog, All-Year duvets are equivalent to 8.5 tog, Winter duvets equivalent to 11 tog and Polar duvets equivalent to 15 tog.

What size and weight of duvet should I purchase?

Our duvets follow four classifications of weight: Summer, All-Year, Winter and Polar. While the All-Year duvet, as the name implies, can be used year-round, we recommend you consider the climate and average temperature of your home, and your own personal preferences for how warm you like to be when you sleep. The excellent quality of our down has exceptional heat regulating properties, meaning Norvegr duvets will have the power to keep you temperate while being as soft and light as a cloud.

How can I differentiate between duvet collections?

All Norvegr duvets feature premium goose down; a product that is magically soft with miraculous heat insulating properties while remaining super light. Our different collections indicate the difference in fill power between duvets. Fill power is the measure of loft, showcasing how many air pockets the filling contains; a higher fill power means a more premium quality, and a better warmth-to-weight ratio.
Our most luxurious products also use exclusive eiderdown; the most premium and best quality of down, hand-harvested from abandoned nests in Svalbard once the geese and their goslings have moved on.

How do I care for Norvegr products?

Norvegr products are made of premium quality materials and time-tested construction methods. This makes them naturally resilient, but we have compiled a helpful guide to ensure your duvets, pillows and linens stay at peak performance and become a lifelong luxury for your bedroom.

What is the Norvegr restoration service?

Norvegr products are built to stand the test of time, with the potential to serve you for many years. Duvets are backed by a 10-year guarantee,  and every down product you purchase is eligible for our unique restoration service. This means you have the option to return your item to our specialised family-run cleaning facility in Norway, the sole expert in down cleaning in the country. For duvets, we recommend utilizing our restoration service every decade, and for pillows, every five years.

The restoration process commences by carefully extracting the down from your product. Subsequently, we employ a thorough steam-cleaning method, followed by gentle drying and a sanitization process using harmless UV irradiation. We provide entirely new duvet and pillow covers, refill them with the freshly cleaned down, and ensure they are topped up to their original loft. As a result, your duvet and pillows are returned to you in a condition that is practically indistinguishable from new, ensuring many more restful nights to come.

For the restoration of Classic, Premium, and Premium Plus duvets and pillows, the cost is calculated as one-fourth of the retail price at the time of restoration. In the case of limited edition duvets, the cost is determined as one-eighth of the retail price at the time of restoration. Please note that these prices do not include shipping, but we can assist you in finding a budget-friendly shipping solution through our preferred couriers.

Due to the high value of the goods that we sell, we do require proof of delivery for all orders. You will be asked to sign for your package when DHL arrives at your doorstep.

As long as we have not yet shipped your products, you can still add items to your existing order. Please give us a call at +47 72 90 04 35 between 9 AM and 5 PM CET or email us at hello@norvegr.com. We will be happy to assist you.

Once your order has been shipped, you will receive an email confirmation of your shipping details along with a tracking number.

Do you offer a repairs service?

Yes, for our down products. Should an accident occur (e.g. you tear a hole in your duvets or pillows, spill something on them, drop a cigarette on them etc.), do NOT throw the products away. We can replace the cotton casing for you. Alternatively, if the down needs to be cleaned, we can do that too. All repair procedures are much more cost-effective than purchasing new products. Please email us at hello@norvegr.com or call us at +47 72 90 04 35 Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM CET and we will find a solution for you.

Additionally, our down products can be restored by us. We recommend restoring your duvet every ten years and your pillow every five year. We will restore both duvets and pillows for you at just a fraction of the cost of replacing the respective products. Down has the ability to regain its shape like no other material, meaning Norvegr products can last for decades if cared for properly. Our service department will open them, steam clean and dry the contents, replace the cotton casings and add new down if needed. Afterwards, they will be as good as new – and we will also extend the duvet warranty for another 10 years.

Please be assured that your personal information is kept 100% confidential and at no risk of being rented or sold to a third party. When processing your order online we require your billing address, shipping address, telephone number, debit/credit card number, expiration date and security code (if applicable). If necessary, these details may be shared with a credit reference agency to verify your order.
